Public Housing Program
The KCKHA Housing Management Department is comprised of three (3) divisions: Elderly Services, Family Services, and Social Services. This department is responsible for ensuring that both residents and KCKHA staff comply with all terms set forth in the lease agreement. They are also responsible for determining and adjusting rents for all tenants based on household income and regulatory guidelines as required by law and enforced by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Re-certifications for all residents are conducted yearly to ensure that rents are adjusted according to their current household income.
The KCKHA manages 2,057 dwelling units throughout the City of Kansas City, Kansas. These units consist of 9 elderly developments (1,164 total units, 0 to 2 bedrooms), 7 family townhouse developments (719 total units, 1 to 6 bedrooms), and scattered site duplex and single-family units (162 total units, 2 to 6 bedrooms). Public housing provides a clean, safe, decent and affordable living environment for eligible lower and very low-income individuals and families. Public housing families pay 30% of their adjusted monthly income for rent and utilities or they may choose to pay a "flat rent".
Housing Management staff respond to complaints and allegations of lease violations, such as drug violations, disturbances, domestic violence and other breaches of contract. Prompt response and fair treatment of these complaints makes a significant difference between mediocrity and excellence in residential housing management. The Housing Management Department takes pride in its fair treatment of resident complaints and works closely with the Finance Department and legal counsel to insure proper and efficient handling of all lease violations and enforcement of regulations.
