TRUANCY TASK FORCE

Contact:
Marc Marcano, Administrative Coordinator or Shawnette Mansfield, Social Services Coordinator, (913) 281-3300.

Description:
KCKHA works in close relationship with the District Attorney's Office and USD 500 to insure that children of public housing and Section 8 are attending school as required by law. All public housing and Section 8 rental agreements (leases) provide mandatory compliance with the truancy laws.

Program Start Date:
September, 1998

Program Size:
The average size of the program is fifteen.

Eligible Participants:
All school aged youth that are enrolled in USD 500 that reside in public housing or Section 8 properties.

Type of Assistance:
The KCKHA makes every effort to link children and families that are having difficulties in attending school, which results in unexcused absences, to the appropriate services in the community. History has shown that generally truancy is only a symptom of a larger problem. KCKHA strives to have their children and families be successful and education is a cornerstone to this process.

Contributors to the Program:
The District Attorney's Office and USD 500 provide KCKHA with the documentation of truant children in Wyandotte County. USD 500 has a mandatory truancy program that children and parents must attend once truancy is identified as an issue. KCKHA works closely with the D.A.'s office and USD 500 in order to insure that public housing and Section 8 children are receiving the needed services and are back in school.

PHA Funding:
No public housing funds are used for this program.
