Description:
A collaboration between Kansas City, Kansas Parks and Recreation and KCKHA. Summer
swimming at a Parkwood Pool for children of all ages, adult supervision is required. KCKHA
provides swimming passes to children residing in public housing.
Transportation is provided to the seven family developments on a rotating basis.
Program Start Date:
June, 1999
Program Size:
Approximately 400 children are served with the summer swimming program.
Eligible Participants:
Youth residing in public housing can swim for no charge. Parents that accompany their
children must pay their own way into the pool.
Type of Assistance:
The children can receive swimming lessons at no cost as well as have "free time"
in the pool. This program helps insure that children have experience in the water and know
how to handle themselves. It also provides a cool relief for hot summer days, especially
for families that do not have air conditioning. Swimming exposes the children to others
from various walks of life and provides a social setting for positive interaction.
Contributors to the Program:
Kansas City, Kansas Parks and Recreation allows large groups of public housing children to
swim on a daily basis. Parks and Recreation bills the HA monthly for the costs.
PHA Funding:
KCKHA commits a small part of their funding from the Public Housing Drug Elimination Grant
to cover the costs of the summer swimming program.
