Description:
Collaboration between KCKHA and USD 500. After school programming for middle and high
school students residing in public housing. Services include homework assistance from
certified teachers, recreation, filmmaking, artistic development, science exploration,
volunteerism and community enhancement and other social enrichment programming.
Program Start Date:
June, 1999
Program Size:
Approximately 75 families are served by this program.
Eligible Participants:
Middle and High School children residing in public housing. There is no cost to the family
for this program.
Type of Assistance:
Project DISCOVERY provides academic and social enrichment to middle school students
residing in public housing. These children are able to be supervised after school and
receive quality programming. The teachers are aware and familiar with the curriculum and
can assist the youth with their studies. Other programming includes services from
Storytellers, Inc., 4-H and Campfire Boys and Girls.
Contributors to the Program:
USD 500 provides the facilities for the program as well as transportation.
PHA Funding:
KCKHA commits part of their funding from the Public Housing Drug Elimination Grant for
this program.
Project DISCOVERY (summer):
Same program as described above except that the program runs for four (4) hours per day.
The youth are provided breakfast and lunch.
