Description:
Collaboration between KCKHA and Kansas City, Kansas Parks and Recreation. The Housing Authority provides scholarships for children in public housing in an effort to integrate them into programs offered through Wyandotte County Parks and Recreation Department. Children may attend any program that Parks and Recreation offers, year round. Limited transportation services to the program sites will be provided by KCKHA to children.

June, 1999

Program Size:
The program serves approximately 50 youth each summer.

Eligible Participants:
Youth ages 5-17 years old. Any person in residing in Kansas City, Kansas may participate in the Parks and Recreation programs. The fees for public housing families are paid for by KCKHA.

Type of Assistance:
The Parks and Recreation department provides hundreds of activities for children, especially during the summer months. Activities include an array of sports, crafts, painting, theatre etc.

Contributors to the Program:
The Parks and Recreation department sets aside a certain number of slots in each activity for children of public housing. If the slots are not full, then they are open to the general public.

PHA Funding:
KCKHA commits part of their funding from the Public Housing Drug Elimination grant money for this program.
