NATIONAL YOUTH SPORTS PROGRAM (NYSP)

Description:
NYSP, in partnership with the NCAA, higher education, governmental agencies and the local community provides sports instruction and educational programs for youth from low-income families. The program operates out of Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Program Start Date:
June, 1999

Program Size:
NYSP sets aside 60 slots for public housing children.

Eligible Applicants:
Any low-income youth ages 10-16.

Type of Assistance:
NYSP provides a free health screening, transportation to and from the program, breakfast and lunch, swimming lessons, basketball, softball, track and field, football, volleyball, soccer, tennis, math and science instruction, alcohol and other drug -abuse prevention, nutrition and personal health, career opportunities and job responsibilities, higher education and community concerns. All sport activities are instructional based. Top quality sports equipment is provided to the program and participants.

Contributors to the Program:
NYSP receives a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. NYSP sub-grants funding to selected higher education institutions, such as Kansas City Kansas Community College.

PHA Funding:
KCKHA commits part of their Drug Elimination Grant funds to this program to provide transportation and additional educational services.
