K.M.A.D.T. SISTER TO SISTER PROGRAM (Kansas Multicultural Alcohol and Drug Treatment)

Description:
Collaboration between KCKHA and KMADT. This program targets minority women and young
adults. It provides women with critically needed counseling and information in hopes of
empowering them to make safe, responsible and healthy life choices. Counseling includes
drug prevention, HIV and sex education, co-dependency, abusive relationships and others.
The Sister to Sister program provides on-site and in-home training and counseling
services.

February, 1999
Program Size:
Approximately 200 residents are served yearly.
Eligible Participants:
Any young female or adult women living in public housing is eligible for the program.
Additionally, the Sister to Sister program is available to any minority female living in
Wyandotte County.
Type of Assistance:
Sister to Sister uses a holistic approach focusing on issues such as low self-esteem,
gender inequality, domestic violence, sexually transmitted diseases, poverty, lack of
positive communication skills, underutilized health care services, education issues and
other factors that have been linked to women's increased risk to numerous social
illnesses. Participants can also host meetings in their home and receive a stipend for
their services.
Contributors to the Program:
KMADT and the Sister to Sister program provides all of the materials and staff for the
program.
PHA Funding:
KCKHA provides space at various community centers for the Sister to Sister Program.
No public housing monetary funds are used for this program.
