Description:
Even Start/Project TEACH is a "family literacy" program that focuses on four components: 1. Adult Education, 2. Early Childhood Education, 3. Parenting time, and 4. Parent and Child Together.

January, 1997

Program Size:
The program serves approximately 30 adults, 30 school aged children and 10 pre-school children.

Eligible Applicants:
Any parent who lives in USD 500 and is in need of their GED, English as a Second Language, and/or preschool for their child (ren). The program serves children up to age eight and is located at ME Pearson Elementary School, 310 North 11th Street, KCKs.

Type of Assistance:
Even Start/ Project TEACH is the only program of its kind in the metropolitan area. It provides assistance with GED's, English as a Second Language (ESL), parent and child activities, field trips, and childcare. Each participant chooses two goals to work on while in the program. The program is very family focused and it allows individuals to meet new people that are trying to improve their lives and the lives of their children.

Contributors to the Program:
Even Start/ Project TEACH is funded by a Kansas State grant from the Board of Education and a Federal Grant. USD 500 provides the space for the program located at ME Pearson Elementary School.

PHA Funding:
KCKHA does not provide any direct funds to the program but the Housing Authority works together with Even Start to provide R.I.F. (Reading is Fundamental) activities for public housing families.
