COMMUNITY SERVICE  (Developmental)

Contact:
Marc Marcano, Administrative Coordinator or Shawnette Mansfield, Social Services Coordinator, (913) 281-3300.

Description:
Collaboration between KCKHA, Wyandotte County Juvenile Court and Project Solve (KCKCC). Two services are available: Community service work for juvenile offenders on probation and community service plus employment in the maintenance department with the Housing Authority.

Anticipated Program Start Date:
May, 2000

Program Size:
Each program can utilize 8-15 individuals at one time.

Eligible Applicants:
Youth must be an adjudicated juvenile offender in Wyandotte County and ordered to community service by the Judge. The youth must have an open case at Wyandotte County Juvenile Court.

Type of Assistance:
The Community Service project allows the opportunity for youth to successfully complete their court ordered service hours. Additionally, the Community Service combined with employment allows the youth to work part-time and perform community service part-time. This allows the youth to earn some money and perform community service part-time, while holding down a job. This program is coordinated with the maintenance department and the jobs usually involve lawn mowing and grounds keeping.

Contributors to the Program:
KCKHA, Wyandotte County Juvenile Court and Project Solve (KCKCC) each contribute to the program. KCKHA provides work sites for community service as well as summer job positions for those who qualify. The juvenile court screens the youth and makes referrals to KCKHA. Project Solve provides direct supervision of the youth while community service projects are being, transportation to and from the work site, and community police officers.

PHA Funding:
KCKHA does not provide any direct funds for this program.
