Services Coordinator, (913) 281-3300.
Description:
The Community Garden is located in the Northeast area of Kansas City, Kansas. The garden
is planted, cultivated and harvested by families residing at Juniper Gardens and the
surrounding neighborhood.
Anticipated Program Start Date:
Spring, 2000
Program Size:
The garden consists of 30 raised garden beds. Families can be responsible for one or more
garden beds.
Eligible Applicants:
Any individual, who would like to participate in the planting and maintaining of the
garden, may then reap the benefits of the fresh fruits and vegetables at harvest time.
Type of Assistance:
The Community Garden provides much more than just a harvest of fresh fruits and
vegetables. The garden provides an opportunity for individuals to work together towards a
common goal and it promotes a sense of community pride and spirit. The garden allows young
and old to work side by side. The older and more experienced gardeners are able to pass
down their secrets of the trade to beginner gardeners.
Contributors to the Program:
The KCK Connection Group works in collaboration with Turner House, the residents of
Juniper Gardens and other residents in the Northeast area. Turner House owns the land on
which the garden is located. Residents of Juniper Gardens and other individuals in the
Northeast area all contribute time to gardening, weeding, watering and other jobs that
make the garden successful. Local community groups and churches donate the materials and
help maintain the garden.
PHA Funding:
No public housing funds are used for the community garden. All materials are donated and
individuals donate their time.
